APEC Is Here: Has Your Daily Life Changed?

Word of the dayStellar

The warmth of the evening came from people reflecting on their own lives and sharing what they felt.

APEC Is Here: Has Your Daily Life Changed?
Together at the 1045th meeting.

Fifty eggs

Anna’s father sent her a parcel from her hometown. Inside were fifty eggs, different in colour and size, each carefully packed. Not one had broken on the journey. Standing in her kitchen, Anna found herself in tears.

In Fifty Eggs, she looked back at the care she had once struggled to recognise, including the day her father carried her to hospital. The gift prompted her to reconsider those memories and recognise her father’s care. Read Anna’s full script (PDF) or download the original Word file.

After the meeting, Stella told Anna that the speech had made her cry, something she seldom did now. Christy thought of the care parents give their children day after day, so familiar that it can be easy to overlook.

How to love and stay in love

David’s How to Love and Stay in Love invited the audience to think about relationships and wellbeing. Before the meeting, he had introduced the subject as one that could be relevant to relationships with a spouse or children. When Stella joked that her coffee had told her to love herself, David called that an important starting point and invited everyone to hear more that evening.

After the talk, Mini said it resonated with a question she had recently been thinking about. Tracy, reflecting the next morning, took away the idea that an independent person still needs good relationships. She saw a thread of love through all three prepared speeches: Anna’s account of her father, David’s talk, and the enthusiasm Tao brought to What the Heck Is Agent Part 2. In Tao’s presentation, she recognised his love for the field he works in.

A city seen through everyday life

The meeting theme, APEC Is Here: Has Your Daily Life Changed?, had already prompted people to share observations before the meeting. Tao had noticed a smoother road and less tyre noise. Anna had noticed that an old testing container beside a park had finally disappeared.

Cecilia built her Table Topics around questions like these. Her slides also asked what living in Shenzhen had taught people about being open-minded and where they would take a visiting friend beyond the familiar attractions. Browse Cecilia’s slides (PDF) or download the original PowerPoint.

Preparing to lead the session, Cecilia had asked the group how long her introduction should be. The next morning, she reflected that taking on the role had shown her how much she still wanted to learn about its rules and structure. She hoped to prepare and try again. Mini, who had accepted Anna’s invitation to serve as Toastmaster of the Evening for the first time, also found that the role gave her a new view of the meeting and a chance to practise connecting its different parts. Anna, meanwhile, said that after the meeting she had started paying closer attention to the changes around Shenzhen.

The conversation carries on

The discussion continued after the meeting. Christy asked Tao how the tools he had shown connected to a language model to build a website. The next morning, another member imagined a program that could help the timer record and summarise speaking times.

The evening’s warmth grew from what people chose to share: a gift from a father, a thought about relationships, an interest in a field of work, and observations from familiar streets. Each began with something personal. Shared with the room, those experiences gave others something to recognise, think about and carry into the next day.
