Word of the dayindustrious

SZTM's 589th meeting, on 12 September 2017, opened with a round of English tongue twisters before table topics master Selina Yuan ran a session on the theme of strength, pairing volunteers so one gave an impromptu speech and the other evaluated it on the spot. Louis Liu and Michelle Yang each completed their tenth prepared speech that night, making them eligible for the Competent Communicator award.

589th Meeting

The club posted its own write-up that week. Some of what it said, in the words it used:

Louis and Michelle, both of you have finished your tenth speeches. You are now eligible for the Competent Communicator award. Congratulations!

Sep 12th

Do you convince yourself of your English competence? Then try to read loud the following tongue twisters as rapidly and clearly as possible:

1) Can you can a can as a canner can a can?

2) I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice-creams.

3) Betty beat a bit of butter to make a better batter.

4) Whether the weather be fine or whether the weather be not, whether the weather be cold or whether the weather be not, we’ll weather the weather whether we like it or not.

Table Topic

The table topic theme was ‘strength’. The hot word of that day was ‘industrious’. Our club’s smart and elegant lady Selina Yuan hosted the table topic session. She suggested one volunteer delivered an impromptu speech on the day’s theme, the other one impromptu evaluated him or her on the spot. Very creative and innovative!

Michael Liu and Michelle Yang, Sharon Wu and Martin Zhan, Louis Liu and Eva Chen, Dylan Guo and Anna, Sunny Wang and Nathan Zhang enthusiastically participated in this session.

Prepared Speech

Afterwards Jane Yang delivered his CC4 prepared speech entitled ‘Game of Thrones’, and David King his CC5 ‘The Best Way to Keep a Doctor Away’, Louis Liu his CC10 ‘I Used to Be a Leader in Charge of Sports’, and Michelle Yang her CC10 ‘I Can Make It’. Louis and Michelle, both of you have finished your tenth speeches. You are now eligible for the Competent Communicator award. Congratulations! Out of question, all of us can make it!

As their individual evaluators respectively, Allen Peng, Dylan Guo (distinguished guest from CETM & CARE), Sunny Wang, Nathan Zhang delivered their motivational and inspiring evaluations. Michael Liu, our club’s senior driver, delivered the table topic evaluation and Eva Chen, our candid and proactive president, delivered her general evaluation.

A big thx

With the long period of holidays fast approaching and members and guests around our club gearing up for vacations and time spent with family and friends, it is often easy to overlook just what goes into making these times so special. Whether we spend holidays with family or friends, or even alone, few of us consider the planning, preparation and team effort required to prepare for these gatherings.

We often take such efforts for granted. Food, presents, entertainment and catering just seem to materialize, and we may think not much effort is needed on our parts. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. Any special even requires all the participants to play their part for the event to be a success. Our club meetings are also special events that require the same participation. Do you remember the third commitment of the Toastmaster’s promise: ‘To prepare for and fulfil meeting assignments’?
