big talk about life
SZTM's 590th meeting, on 19 September 2017, used three table topics toastmasters at once, Eva Chen, Martin Zhan and Selina Yuan, for a session built around 'big talk about life'. David King, who had placed first in the club's fall humorous speech contest in Mandarin but lost at the area level due to poor time management, shared what he had learned from the loss and delivered the only prepared speech of the night. Six guests attended, and the club noted its next regular meeting would be suspended for the National and Mid-Autumn holidays.

The club posted its own write-up that week. Some of what it said, in the words it used:
David King won the first place of our club’s fall humorous speech contest in mandarin, however, unfortunately he lost the potential award in the I3 area fall humorous speech contest on last Sunday, because of his time management failure.
If autumn comes, can the spring be far behind?

Warm-up Session
Hosted by our diligent and proactive VPM, Sunny Wang, in the warm-up session of our 590th regular meeting all attendees enthusiastically did hot exercising together except the timer and prepared speech maker. As a developing member, let me try to review the routine meeting which its theme was‘big talk about life’, and the hot word of that day was Developing.

Table Topic
At this meeting we had three table topic toastmasters, in turn they were Eva Chen, Martin Zhan and Selina Yuan. Carol Ban, Koby Sa and Sandy Zhang, Sunny Wang, Anna Han, Joy Zhao and Lynn, Lilian Zeng, Conner, Allen Peng and Nina Lin, passionately volunteered to express their big talks about their life. A threesome toastmaster on the table topic session will be a beneficial innovation. Awesome and amazing! Very creative and innovative! Shenzhen is really an innovative city.

Prepared SpecchCC6: I ask myself

David King
David King won the first place of our club’s fall humorous speech contest in mandarin, however, unfortunately he lost the potential award in the I3 area fall humorous speech contest on last Sunday, because of his time management failure. He shared his precious experience of the participation of the club and area contest and carefully analyzed the reason of failure. It appeared due to the poor time control, as a matter of fact, it really was due to laziness neglectful in taking necessary and hardworking practices. What a painful lesson! Whatever, he has already determined to participate in next year spring’s humorous speech contest. He said with a glint of self-mockery in his eyes, ‘If autumn comes, can the spring be far behind?’ In order to practice his time management skill, as he found the timer role that night was available as soon he booked it without hesitation. Action forever speaks louder than words! Due to some unexpected causes, there was only one prepared speaker. Out of question our King won the best prepared speaker award that night at last. Then he was kidding, ‘This night will be a sleepless night for me again’.

Testimonials
Each role we play–from timer to toastmaster, from table topics master to grammarian –develops our leadership skills in incremental ways. Each role is important as it ensures the meeting as a whole provides an opportunity for member involvement, growth and development. Your contribution to club excellence is to prepare, to participate fully in whatever role you are assigned. Take on each role with enthusiasm even if it is not your favorite choice.

Learning to successfully undertake any role is great training for life.
Few of us get to select every aspect of what we do on a daily basis in our career or as members of our family and community. Why should it be any different in Toastmasters? Prepare and welcome the opportunity to participate fully rather than avoid a role or not give it your whole-hearted focus. Our club meetings are our festive events and their success depends on our commitments to fulfil our responsibility to our fellow members. Always remember once an SZTMer, always an SZTMer. Always Remember the Member.
