Debate Night
Debate Night
Meeting 917 replaced the usual Table Topics session with a structured mini-debate on whether young people should resign without a backup plan. Six debaters squared off in three rounds: Opening Statements, Arguments, and Conclusion, moderated under formal rules with a 25-minute time cap.
The Pro side (Chris, Emma, Becky) argued for the freedom to reset, while the Con side (Alfred, Brownie, Sheya) defended the case for planning ahead. The debate topic itself sparked days of discussion in the group chat, with the English phrasing evolving from “resign without hesitation” to “resign without a backup” after members pointed out the distinction.
Speeches and Word of the Day
Three prepared speeches rounded out the evening. Brent spoke on what makes a good speech, Becky explored the value of mentorship, and Evan encouraged the audience to speak up for themselves. The word of the day, “choice,” tied neatly into the debate theme.
To resign or not, that’s a choice.
