The anxiety of growing

The night before the meeting, the group chat turned into a backstage confessional. One member summed up what Toastmasters does to your nerves: “参加头马之前，登台的焦虑是一刻；参加头马之后，备稿的焦虑是一周.” Not everyone shared that level of stress, though. Brownie, still working on her speech the day before, reported: “我好像没那么蕉绿了，明天演讲，今天还没写完稿子.” Her strategy? Sign up first, trust the deadline. “所以有时候就是先把演讲报上，deadline 之前一定会有 idea 的.” Anna discovered a different problem entirely: “我才搞笑，我发现我背的跟我写的完全不一样～.”

Prepared speeches

Three speakers took the stage under the theme “Grow Up.” Enya asked the room to consider what the best moment of life really is. Anna shared a personal story about feeling lost. Brownie explored leadership styles, turning the question back on the audience. Brent, serving as TME, gave up two Table Topics slots to make room for more participants.

First-time GE

Susie did double duty as Meeting Manager while backing up the General Evaluator role. The meeting had only one guest, Priscilla. After the meeting, Susie reflected on her first time serving as GE: “第一次做总评，感受到只要接角色就都可以做到，参与了角色收获远多于旁听.” She also took away a practical lesson: “总结发言时要先讲重点，控制时间，不然讲不完要点。把听到的感受到的，英语口语讲出来变成习惯.”

Growing into the role

Someone in the group noticed the change in Brent as TME: “主席气质变了.” That quiet observation captured the theme of the evening better than any speech title could. Growing up, at Toastmasters, is less about big revelations and more about showing up, taking on a role you are not quite ready for, and finding that you can do it after all.
