Jane2019The club spent five years interviewing itself.
Somebody would decide they wanted to know how a member had got here, ask them for a coffee or a meal, and write up what was said. Then the next person did it. There was no schedule and no brief. The pieces that came out of it are uneven in length, wildly uneven in register, and better than anything written to order would have been.
They are about the ordinary parts of people’s lives, which is why they are worth keeping: a member who practised one speech ten times on the bus and in the shower; a member who spent years playing everything safe and then went abroad at thirty to start over; a member whose son learned to stand on a stage because she kept turning up on Tuesdays.
Nothing here has been rewritten, shortened or corrected. Each one carries an English line saying who it is about and roughly what it covers, so that a reader who does not read Chinese knows what they are looking at.
