Harry Wang, an English teacher, reflects on how growing up valuing knowledge shaped him, and how that knowledge let him keep teaching and earning during the COVID-19 outbreak when many others could not work.

The Power of Knowledge

I was born in a poor family in a shabby house in 1989. Both my parents are farmers. When I was young, five or six years old, I guess, some neighbors around me have influenced me deeply, because they worked for the government, got wonderful salary and led a great life at that time. Unlike us, we had a tough life during that time. My parents had to do some labour work because of low literacy and we were not able to have a decent life. My father, a farmer, never neglected the importance of learning knowledge and he kept telling me to study well. Deeply touched by the different lifestyles we had with our neighbors, I came to know the importance of knowledge. I know knowledge can definitely change my destiny. This idea was deeply rooted in my young heart.

I am lucky enough to have perfect parents like mine, and I was also lucky enough to have great teachers when I stepped into the schools.I met great teachers who always encouraged me to study hard during every different stage of my life. What’s more, I was fortunate enough to make fabulous friends around me in every different stage of my life. I am always hopeful for the future, and I always could get good feedback because of my hard work, which made me feel quite optimistic almost all the time even though I was a little bit down sometimes. I was usually considered as the apple of my teachers and the other people’s children. This is all the power of knowledge. I got great sense of achievement because of the knowledge I learned. I always immerse myself in the sea of knowledge and I fully suck the sweetness of knowledge.

I have graduated from university for 7 years and I have constantly felt the power of knowledge in different situations. What impressed me most this year was that period. With the outbreak of the Covid-19, a large number of companies, and factories were closed down, and some of my villagers of my age couldn’t return to their workplaces and they had to stay at home and did nothing aimlessly, even though they are the backbones of their families. The disease stopped them going out, which made them have no income for a few months. Things seemed good for me, because I could still share my knowledge with my students online and I still have my income even though I stayed at home. All the villagers admire me and my parents so much that they speak highly of us. With knowledge I can have a decent life. With knowledge I am the strongest guy during the most dangerous period of the year. With knowledge I can go further. With knowledge I can explore the world according to my will.

All in all I am so thankful to my parents that they let me know the importance of knowledge at a very young age. What I am doing now is to convey the power of knowledge to my students. I do hope they are able to fly even if they have no wings of their own. Thank you, Harry, you never give up yourself. Thank you, knowledge, you give me the power to fly.
