What is Toastmasters?

Toastmasters International is a non-profit organisation with clubs in more than 140 countries. Members meet regularly to practise public speaking and leadership.

There is no instructor. Members learn by doing: giving speeches, running the meeting, and evaluating each other. You work at your own pace through a structured curriculum called Pathways.

A meeting has three parts

Prepared speeches. Members sign up in advance to deliver a speech from a Pathways project. The first one is usually an Icebreaker, a short self-introduction. Later projects cover storytelling, persuasion, research presentations, and managing difficult audiences.

Table Topics. The impromptu round. Someone poses a question, you have one to two minutes to answer, and you had no warning. This is where most people improve fastest.

Evaluations. Every prepared speech gets a dedicated evaluator who says what worked and what to change next time. A General Evaluator then reviews the meeting as a whole, including the evaluators. Feedback on the feedback is normal here.

Why it works

Practice is scheduled, so it happens. Feedback is immediate and specific, so you know what to fix. Roles rotate, so you end up running things whether or not you planned to. And nobody in the room is judging you, because they all had a first speech too.

Is it for me?

Toastmasters suits people who are terrified of speaking and people who already speak for a living. The format holds up either way, because you set your own goals.
